What constitutes a "MASK"?
An exploration in making with the topic of MASK, a personal piece of furniture, giving the body a surround sound experience.
The frame structure to house the speakers
Final construction of the shell
CONTAINER
After the original "finished product" I was issued a challenge - make the MASK fit into a container.
The system then became four modular pieces to be stacked on one another, shifted around, and expanded - making it transform from a personal system to potentially interact with multiple bodies.
What I learned
With this being my first project as a part of the MDD program at the U, I learned so much from this project. I learned the process through ideation, prototyping, and constructing a product. I learned how to express my ideas through drawing and constructing. I gained more experience using applications like Adobe Illustrator, photoshop, and Autodesk Fusion 360. I was also able to gain more experience using shop tools like saws, sanders, and drills, while also working with a bit of audio technology.
What I would do differently
If i had the time and resources I would love to fully recreate the speaker system. I originally wanted the wood housing to be made of a higher quality, solid wood instead of plywood. For the outer wrapping I would love to either steam bend a thin piece of solid wood and add an inside ring. The inside ring would hide any wires and hold the speakers more firmly in place. Finally I would love to create a way to install the amp inside the ring.
